How is it that this game achieves in four megabytes what others desperately try to find in 10 gigabytes? The combat is fluid and interesting, the combat system is great. The difficulty isn't exactly high, but I suspect I'm not halfway through so maybe that'll change. Did I mention the combat system? Has this been emulated elsewhere? I've never seen anything quite like it. Are there any other games like this that I've missed because of age?

Sadly my SNES gave out before i had a chance to play this game :(

wasn't it remade for the DS or something?

Edit: just looked and yes, it was released for the DS and the Wii virtual consol service AND, apparently there is an iOS version of the game too :O

Chrono trigger really is great. Some links on or about it
:
A guy does a level 1 run of the game (well, technically), while also being hilarious and analysing the game as to exactly why it is so good.

It has really good music

It has really, really good music

In fact, it's so good rappers regularly steal music from it to ramble over because they have no creativity

Don't get chrono cross.

CT achieves in 4MB what others fail to do in 10GB because they're triple A testicles that go for flash and innovative combat but fuck it all up and have a story that tends to be as deep as a teaspoon and as impenatrable as a wall of spiky "fuck you"s.

Disclaimer: I an't be fucked to google half those words to make sure I'm not ballsing up my english.

Yes, a few years back.

Chrono Cross was actually really enjoyable, and your link was completely unrelated to Cross, but pretty funny nonetheless.

Ah, Chrono Trigger. On of those very few RPGs that acually managed to keep my attention (others being Fallout, Tales of Symphonia and some of the Mario RPGs). I discovered it among a bunch of random snes roms I got from a friend when I was young and fell in love with it instantly.

Truly a classic.

Honestly, Im not that amazed by the music track. Are you sure thats not nostalgic talking? In the same respect, I could say that UW had really good music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnxaY5I3t0w

It would be difficult for me to be nostalgia'ing considering I only picked it up when it came out on the DS. Music taste is subjective, but there are a lot of people who'd fight tooth and nail to claim that CT's soundtrack is one of the best in any game. Would I go that far? Ehh maybe not, but it has some really stand out tracks, particularly considering just how well they fit the parts of the game they're in.

ya music is way too subjective to classify as such

Wow, this is one of the few time's I've seen where someone has gotten into someone else's nostalgia. Usually when people recommend old games to other people, the newcomer doesn't see the appeal.

In other news, I've been playing Tales of Graces F on PS3.
It won't blow anyone's mind and doesnt really do anything new, but its really fun - and really funny if you appreciate "lame" humour, hahah. I don't think I've ever laughed this much from a jRPG. Except for maybe the recent Atelier games. Even the first Disgaea didn't make me laugh as much.

Is tales of graces' protaganist as likable as yuri? Because I feel I may been spoiled by vesperia and his general chillness.

Also, to anyone who hasn't played chrono trigger, I heartily recommend it.

I use a PC Emulator for all my SNES games. Works wonderful.

I was tempted to use cheats alot of times, but I did it anyways without them, and its really fun.

Xenogears.

Shite graphics, but best RPG ever.
Sadly never came out in the UK though, but managed to aquire it still. :D

Go look it up, think FF7 ish style (not too similar though) but with giant mechas..

Also the characters use weapons such as rods, whips, guns and martial arts / wrestling, rather than all swords. The mechas use the same fighting style and weapons as their pilots as well. :D

I can second Xenogears, I gotta play that again, gotta charge up my PSP again......unless I can transfer the saves from my PSP to my PS3....

mmm. Xenogears. Now, i've never played it, but really seriously you guys are the first people i've heard who've looked back on it and found it to be really good. From what I know it has some good ideas, some terrible ideas, some good music and absolutely no budget for the second half of the game. Oh and a complete clusterfuck of a plot.

Pretty good summary heh, mostly good ideas, lack of budget is a bast how they had to practically cut out the entire second half. :(

Plot is great though, just takes some understanding, REALLY deep stuff that not many games have gone into in the same way.

I havent played Vesperia due to no PS3 english version, waiting for the fan translation to be released :)

But the answer is probably no. The main hero of graces is your standard anime action-boy, all about protecting and doing good and all that stuff. And being clueless about the heroine's unrequited love for him.

What makes Graces fun is that all the other characters make fun of him. Well, they make fun of each other as well. This might be a standard thing with Tales games, I dunno. Graces is the first Tales game I've played. Oh I tried Abyss for about an hour but it annoyed me so I quit it.

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting a ton out of it, but I have been looking for a good RPG for quite some time. I played Skyrim, which was brilliant but unfortunately easy and managed to get repetitive (Not enough enemy types, I think. Even a set of modifiers like Vindictus has would be nice). I've played Persona 3, and that was... interesting... but I'd say it was a pretty good game. I tried Kingdoms of Amalur at a friend's house. He liked it, I say it's complete piss. To be honest, the only thing I've learned is that a game's quality is really not affected by whether it is linear or it is not linear--the only problems, to me, exist at the edge of linear games, such as rail-guided FPS campaigns, or slapshot mixtures that would be nice as a free-roam, but instead force linear play. Chrono Trigger is pretty linear in plot, but it makes up for that by letting you battle the final boss whenever you feel like it (I've tried twice at random times and died pretty horribly).

The combat system is intuitive, if a bit tricky. There's no real handholding that I've noticed. Dungeons are nice, have hidden things, are sort of large without being a hassle, and keep running trends. Everything just seems to click so well--and when you go to the same time three times? Doesn't feel repetitive to me, doesn't feel like padding. As a matter of fact, the only thing I can really complain about is that even though I have five people to pick from, and the group size is Three, it's actually two to pick from because I'm one of them, and there seems to be only one good actual healer. I mean, it's not like things cost a lot. I have metric asstons of cash that I could never actually spend if I wanted to, but unless I'm missing something, there are no AoE heal items, unlike the plethora of AoE heals that are enabled via combo-moves with the princess.
However, when it comes to the third slot, I still don't know. I think I'll stick with the inventor chick. She's stronk as hell and her ability to see enemy HP makes the small fights way easier to churn through.

Later on you don't HAVE to have Crono in your party. (Don't know why you'd not want to though still heh). I usually used him, Marle and Frog, all their skills seemed to work together really well, and their 3-person combo is VERY strong, and while Marle is healing, Frog and Chrono can still go to town with their combos which are still pretty good.

Always just slapped haste on, and then brough the pain with the combos. Tis one of my fave games though, very well made.

Tried playing without Chrono. With wizard, frog and bitch. Didn't go well. Either I sucked too much, didn't grind enough or I needed Chrono.

Is the DS remake any good? I'm not much of a jRPG guy but maybe I'll give it a shot.

Also, DS games are too ******* expensive in this day and age of app stores and Steam.

The DS remake is pretty good. At least as good as the original, I would say. It also adds some new content which is nice, but depending on your preferences it may or may not add much.

Yeah, DS games (or any console/handheld games for that matter) are expensive. Usually you can get a decent deal second hand, though.
