So I've got a question. Now that GPGnet is down, and may be down for the forseeable future, is there any possibility that THQ, Sqaure Enix, or heaven forbid GPG could take any legal action to force FAF to cease its activities? Would they have anything to gain by doing so, or any reason to do so, or any legal basis to do so? Also wondering if FAF would ever have a chance of getting any sort of official seal of approval in the future?
Finally, what of all the mods and maps stored on GPGnet? Any way they could be released to the public so that even if GPGnet is down for good, the mods and maps that were on there would be preserved?

I guess they can try shutting us down, but I would like to know on what legal reason. We don't hack or modify the game to connect to FAF instead of GPG, we don't modify the game to avoid any kind of copy-protection, and I didn't reverse-engineer the protocol as it's available here, on the official forums. I don't think they will earn anything from the shitstorm of bad publicity I can make if they try But a "official approval", don't count on it either.

If gpgnet is going to be down for good it would be nice to have all the mods and maps that where in the vault put up on a torrent so we all can have access to it all.

Though I have not logged into FA for over a year now; it is definitely a game I never considered uninstalling while clearing out my hard drive.
Hats off to the Chris Taylor, the devs, the community, the modders, and the essence of Supreme Commander.
GPGnet will be missed.

Bring it back , bring it back plz GPGnet was far from being perfect, but was still the best platform for some to find games.

As has been stated before, GPG was not notified that the service provided by our Quazal partners to run GPGNet was being terminated.
We are now investigating our options, and the only thing I can say for sure is GPGNet won't be back up this week, and that we have successfully contacted THQ, Quazal, and Square Enix about the options we have in front of us, and how they are willing to help.
As some have speculated, our worst case scenario is that we could be legally prevented from ever bringing GPGNet back in any form, since we don't technically own the IP (Square Enix), the backbone and data (Quazal), or the contract (THQ), but we are obviously doing everything we can to negotiate something better than that with what little leverage we have.
I will use this post to provide updates and progress as we receive them, but do not want to miss an opportunity to thank the legions of fans, modders, volunteer moderators, admins, and tournament directors who have poured years of their life into making GPGNet a place that so many could call home. The game and matchmaking was something good, but the community was something amazing.
I hope you will all continue using these forums (GPG owns them, you can pry them from our cold, dead hands!) to keep on top of friendships and projects that are important to us as we proceed with the investigation.
- Servo At least you must advise an say that... can we get a pack with all maps and mods? I only have about a pack of 2GB of that, and I want to save them

Well I guess that brightens the moods of everyone here a bit if all those years of mods and maps are not lost forever in a dead forgotten server somewhere. If GPGnet becomes permanently gone what can we do but find an alternate solution?

You can be sure that if I some point I'm unable (or not willing) to continue to support the project, I will give the whole code as someone ready to take the lead (I've already done that with the Community Bugfix Path project). Money-wise, we have currently enough resources to run the server for 20 months without any trouble.

Why the hell are some people against FAF? Either misinformed meaning they never tried it, or stupid. I dunno which.
Stop assuming things, read!! You went to school to be educated, why dumb yourself down and not read? FAF is a lobby, just like GPGnet, but better. What's better about it? Try reading! Try out the thing!! In fact, as a result of there being FAF, even before GPGnet closed, there were way more people playing games from FAF lobby, than GPGnet lobby. More players are supporting it, and they can't all be wrong.

Its either they don't like whats it doing or they hate not having mod powers or even the changes aka balance although no balance changes have been appiled yet only 3603.

It's not helping calling them idiots Some people are less prone to accept change or try new things. Some of these are already adapted and happy with the changes (remember that these changes happened 2 years ago for most of us... Remember that we had to adapt at that time too). Some others try it and will eventually adapt. And others will refuse to play it no matter what, or even trying it. We can't do anything about the latter. They have to willing to make some efforts and fight their tendencies to reject any change. We can't force them to do it. For the others, we have to make them understand that : - The current balance changes are almost (the biggest in fact) official changes from GPG. Yes the 3603 "beta" patch was never released on GPG, but it was released on Steam. Done by GPG, approved by THQ. That's really something that we (meaning the FAF community) have to communicate on. Steam and FAF are using 36xx, only GPGNET was stuck on 3599. So, for new players (steam players), using a 3599 balance is not something natural, while FAF only propose very little changes from the game they know. And we are aiming new players as much (if not more) than older ones. Because let's face it : If we only focus on older players who like only 3599, the player base will be so small that the project will die by itself in 5 months. - We will make other changes in the future, nothing is written in stone. Something they hate now can change tomorrow. And we listen to "seton players", and have some in our balance team.
