This is actually not such a bad idea. Ive been thinking about what it would be like to allow people to carry tranquilizer guns or other non-lethal weapons, like (modified?) tasers instead of guns. You'd still be able to "defend your family", but it should also reduce deaths caused by firearms..

I wouldn't but I'm thinking rational right now. Someone who goes on a killing spree generally doesn't make a rational estimate of his chances and I bet he could take down a couple of people before getting zapped. The harm has already been done then. And even then: if you try to fry him and miss (or your batteries run dead or it turns out the contacts don't connect properly due to clothing or...), you'll be the one next with a hole in his chest.

Fighting people with guns without a gun is just dumb. Go ahead and try being a hero if you want. Maybe you'll even succeed. But don't come crying when it doesn't work out. Oh, wait, you won't be able to.

That's another good point. Because these weapons are known as "non-lethal", the chance of people abusing them will be even larger than for guns. Can you imagine a couple of teenagers thinking it's a good idea to zap that fat kid around the block for fun? It's non-lethal, right?

Shoot the darts into someone then say "take me to the cashpoint/atm and withdraw all your money or you are getting demolished"

Then just taze them for fun after they hand all the money.
