My friends and I have signed up. However since there are no guarantees, and I dont even like betas, I am not hype.

They are doing multiple events. I'm guessing every 2 or 3 weeks they'll host another event. I wouldn't be surprised if this first event just lasts through this weekend.

I think most of the upcoming betas will be 2 or 3 days long at best. They're concentrating heavily on WvWvW balancing (and hopefully toning down some visual effects). Though 48 hours in the weekend should be more than enough time for your average gamer to get a good glimpse of the game, unless you've seriously ****** up your schedules and ruined your weekends.

So the first open beta weekend is happening now. Rather, it was happening until the servers were taken down for whatever reason. Who's in?

I am. I'm in and loving it.

I'm in. Sorrow's Furnace - "Hildr Lucasta"

I love coming up with pretentious fantasy names

Also, the servers weren't "taken down". They just derped and should now work again.

Hows the combat? I liked the original GW combat because it had bodyblocking and a lot of "instant feedback" skills, like knockdowns and interrupts.

From what I've seen of GW2 videos, it looks a lot more like normal MMO combat, with people running around, waving their arms and summoning numbers.

After playing Dragons Nest, my expectations have risen and I don't think I can tolerate old-fashioned MMO combat anymore.

The combat is way more action-packed than regular MMO combat. Indeed, it has all the stuff that you say the original had.

I'm loving my elementalist. The versatility of the class is astounding. In WvWvW PvP, I've been running around with Scepter/Dagger as my weapons. Air atunement is by far my favorite. I'll ride the lightning in and updraft out, knocking them over, then smack 'em with a lightning strike and blind them while they're down, switch over to fire, get them burning and then flame grab them to hopefully death.

I've been focusing on precision, too, so crits aplenty.

Unfortunately, my server, Ferguson's Crossing, is losing pretty badly. I joined the server because it was the only one that didn't have a population of "High" so I would have less of a chance of encountering the usual open-beta lagfests. The adverse effect of this is, of course, losing badly at WvWvW PvP because we simply have less people.

On the PvE side, I'm really enjoying the way they did the open-world quests. There's none of that "bring me 5 boar tusks" crap.

The best thing about gw 1 was team builds. I ragequit though when the devs nerfed the build I came up with that was extremely successful, which was the Emo Smite spikers, yet let iway gayness run rampant.

Welp, next beta then.

After continuous whining I got maz to agree and give me half his money to buy a siege golem. It took us about 10 minutes to get to the goddamn castle and then about 2 minutes to die a gaggle of guards.
I also almost killed a ranger with it which was pretty fun

Yeah, small teams of people really can't do much in WvWvW. You could take a supply depot (not that you need siege weapons to do that), but you need at least 10-20 people to take a tower or garrison.

We had a big clash between a total of 40 or so people by a green gate at one point. Constant hail of arrows and what were essentially raiding parties ran at us once in a while. I had tons of fun occasionally running up to their wall, rapidly summoning 3 illusions up by the archer, mindwracking them and then striking with a mindstab. Almost took some people out with that :P

Concerning the waste of MY money that was the golem, we WERE against 2 players and about 7 NPC guards. We almost took them out too.

But it's now set in stone. Once the game actually releases, my main will be a greatsword & scepter/focus mesmer.

EDIT: Now that I think about it... I wonder if my utility skill, which puts an orb around the target that reflects projectiles back to it would've worked on arrow carts...

I may end up buying this game... but not soon. It looks a lot more fun than other MMOs I've seen recently, though.

The engagement with the golem was actually really fun cause at one point a player ranger got a little too close and I just grabbed him and started powerfisting him. Almost 3-hit the bastard.

It does not. It's treated like an AoE rather than a projectile. You can reflect trebuchet shots, though it's very difficult to do so.

Damn shame

though it would probably have been a bit OP, reflecting 50 arrows back to the shooter simultaneously, especially considering they did about 700dmg per hit :p

Nope. It's over now. Next one should be in about a month IIRC.
