No, calling the w a double u. THAT is stupid and wrong. Also: abbreviating world wide web to www was the biggest mistake ever in the English language. It's the only abbreviation that takes longer to pronounce than what it's short for.

W is called "double u" probably from ye olde english/welsh/celtic/whatever or something, where it's said as a long oo sound.

You can still get it a bit in modern times if you do a japanese engrish accent.
