According to an e-mail received by BigDownload:

Quote:
Kings and Castles, the fantasy RTS game that was supposed to be the next project for developer Gas Powered Games, is now on hold, according to an email from Gas Powered's founder and CEO Chris Taylor to Big Download. When we emailed Taylor today asking for an update about the game he replied, "Well... We've put the project on hold for now, but the moment I know more I will let you know..." When we asked for more info he remained vague, telling us, "I can't go into those details just yet... let's call it a 'timing' thing..."

Gas Powered Games first announced Kings and Castles nearly a year ago and the developer did something unusual in order to promote it; it produced a weekly series of video blogs showing the team working on the game during its pre-production stage along with a big heap of comedy as well. In early October, the final video blog was issued with Taylor on camera saying that the videos would be taking a break while Kings and Castles moved into full production.

On hold in terms of coverage or on hold as in "we stopped working on it"? If it's the latter I am very curious what other project GPG are doing.

Maybe some of the developer conferences starting soon could shed some more light on this situation?

"let's call it a 'timing' thing..."

May be an attempt to coordinate the release date according to other releases or maybe to time it up with a holiday.

Hopefully more info on it soon.

I sure hope they've got something in the work that will get rid of that mood.
Let's put some hope into that 'unannounced project' that sorian's apparently working on.

I assume that unannounced project requires 'all hands on deck' to meet the milestones/deadlines.

I think this is the most plausible explanation. But now the question is "what exactly is this extremely important project?"

Honestly I hope not. You'd have to redo the entire CBP then to deal with the new balance :P .

i doubt GPG is even working on a RTS.
More likely some MMORPG in a free 2 play style.
That is what everybody is doing.

What reason comes to mind why they should stop K&C?

think 30 sec about it and you know what it cannot be:

1. Another great game: Why stop a game in development to develop another game?7
The only reason can be a publisher came to them and gave them money for something else that is not K&C. In this case look in my 2nd sentence and see f2p mmorts ;)

2. Something related to SupCom2: I doubt Square Enix told them to do any more work on SupCom2. We have no devs post on SupCom2, we have no patch. It would be really suprising to see anything in the SupCom franchise within the next 2 years.

So what can be the reasons?
Sure they told us something about a secret project, but why would they stop their main project for that?

Only reason can be MONEY. And it probably is money. Chris said "timing". What is "timing" in economy about, if not money.

Probably they didnt find a publisher and have not enough money to publish themselves. Now they do something else, maybe less gigantic to make some quick money.
f2p mmorpg comes to mind.
if it was at least a f2p mmorts :D

did you notice: Sorians blog is abandoned too, maybe he doesnt even work at gpg anymore, who knows? (ok I know he is posting here in the forums, but cannot tell, when he did post the last time)

So, think of me, when GPG announces their MMORPG, probably playing in the Space Siege universe.

Of course i have no facts, this is more a fun post. ;)

I knew it. Just sux that Chris has built all the hype and then kicks his fan base in the nuts. I won't buy in to Chris's crap anymore.

It's probably been cancelled. Probably was too fun at the last play test, so they where told to axe it.

I like how a lot of people on this forum always assume the worst. Does no one remember that they are working on a secret project? It could be about money, because that money could be going to this project. It could be that this is taking up the time they had to work on other things. "I can't go into details just yet" really implies that something interesting is going on. Not to mention, the devs have still been active on the forums, so I doubt that they're about to kick the can just yet.

Lets be patient. I know, its hard, but try it. Lets give him some credit that he deserves.

Sorian is still at GPG. He's posted on my SupCom 2 threads very recently, along with other GPG employees.

As for CT's e-mail:

"Well... We've put the project on hold for now, but the moment I know more I will let you know..." When we asked for more info he remained vague, telling us, "I can't go into those details just yet... let's call it a 'timing' thing..."

Notice that CT himself needs to "know more". This could mean that the project is on hold because of (this is not an exhaustive list, just some things that come to mind):

  • programming limitations, i.e., hitting a serious roadblock;

  • a 3rd-party publisher wanting K&C compatible with other platforms for distribution similar as happened to SupCom 2 and the Xbox. In this case perhaps the current K&C development has to be restructured to meet this demand and, therefore, GPG needs to put development on hold to examine this possibility before entering into a partnership;

  • potential lawsuit by/against GPG;

  • potential legal ramblings for use of GPG-developed material in the control of previous publishers;

  • since GPG seems to be working on more than one project, it has to work according to rigid completion dates, i.e., it has to switch over to the other project or divest some resources into the other project;

  • GPG is ahead of schedule, is waiting for gaming expos to debut the protoype, get some feedback, and then put the finishing touches;

  • crisis at GPG how to market and release the product and not make the same idiotic mistake as was done releasing SupCom 2 at the same time as StarCraft 2.

To be honest, if it's about trying to time the release of the game... I'm not convinced they can accurately predict when they'll be done if they're only so far into production.

I heard they're doing Homeworld 3, God of War 4, and Resident Evil 6, maybe that's why they stopped.....

I simply hope GPG find clever investors understanding all the potential and skillness there are at GPG.

The massively secret massive secret secret is clearly a Paragon that they're building so they can have as much money as they please.
