I am frustrated with Steam.

I purchased 2 retail copies of this game including the down loadable content from Steam.

Steam takes ages to update, when it finally updated after about 2 hours the game is now choppy and unresponsive. The game does not run smoothly and internet gaming is virtually unplayable with Steam.

I will never spend another cent on any games that have anything to do with Steam.

I am going back to SC FA without all these hassles.

GPG need to fix these issues with Steam or they will lose a lot of customers.

What issues are you having? Patches and DLC take long to download in any game, and steam actually downloads stuff quite fast. I usually dont have lag, and if I do, its usually the fault of 1 or more players' connections or their PCs. Can you post your PC specs?

Actually steam has been pretty good recently, there were some problems with it a few weeks back but afaik they've been fixed now.

You need to define what you mean by "choppy".. Are you experiencing lag (ping spikes etc)? Or graphical glitches...? Or something else? The point is that there are several potential causes for this type of behaviour, and to just blame steam for it straight away isn't really fair.

If you can be a bit more specific then someone can probably help you fix it.

Today Steam did an update on my computer.

Now when I play the game it freezes and is not responsive. I do a CTR ALT DELETE on my windows 7 32 bit PC and then press cancel and the game runs again from where it froze. This happens often. Prior to the update today have not had this particular problem before offline.

Prior to the Update the game sometimes freezes in multiplayer and I lose connection so i gave up playing on the internet a while back. Now playing offline is just as bad.

Had I known these issues with Steam would happen I would never have purchased the game.

I dont have crashes very often. It could still be your computer. I'd like to see your specs:

Motherboard
Processor
Graphics card
RAM

If you cant find this, run dxdiag (press start, type dxdiag in the search bar, press enter)

Ok here is my DXdiag I haven't copied all of it as it is very long file.

SC FA runs very well on my computer including LAN gaming on large maps.
SC 2 is less demanding so I should not have these issues I am experiencing.

Well, that PC is way better than mine, so it should be able to run it..

reads further..

Why do you have a nvidia 7950? That card sucks compared to the rest of your setup! I dont think thats the problem, but holy cow, that thing doesnt belong in that computer! Its a laptop graphics card right? I dont know how well this game supports laptops, but looking at the stats it should at least run the game..

Ugh. It's a Pentium 4. That thing may as well be a Pentium 1.

Dude, your computer is slow as molasses. Get a faster one, then see if the problem persists.

The ASUS P4C800-E motherboard has an AGP Pro 8X graphics port.

The highest NVidia video card available for AGP is the 7950 GT.
No its not a laptop graphics card it is a high end graphics card for AGP.
Despite this the motherboard just about runs all my games extremely well except for this game at the moment. Never had the need to upgrade to the latest stuff.
Not sure how to correct this issue. Had a quick look in the tech forum seems same problems there after updating.

In reference to the other post this computer is "slow as molasses" I have to disagree. I played Oblivion, Sacred 2, Guild Wars and all run smoothly. Shes an old engine not the latest but she can sure go with the latest new games.

well, its a 3.2 ghz dual core... I run the game on a 2.4 ghz quad core, and I have seen people running the game on a single core... not very well, but it still worked...

It was high end in 2006....
But yeah, older cards like that arent supported for many games...

Actually its a single Intel 3.20 GHz processor, not dual core or anything else.

How well does it play Crysis? Got a 3DMark score to share?

GW is a very old game, released in '05. Sacred 2 was two years ago, so it's not exactly bleeding edge either. TES was released in '06.

These are all old games.

Now, I'll point out that the 7950GT was four years ago. There's been no less than four generations of nVidia cards between the 7 Series and what is current.

[EDIT:] Neph. A single one of your 2.4GHz cores would run rings around his... even on highest power saving mode. The P4 lines were just poorly designed. It's laughable.

I can't say how it stacks up against a dual core 2.4 Ghz.
But I may be mistaken when running games only one core is utilized therefore would be slower than a single 3.2 Ghz processor.
Where the dual core would triumph is in it's multi-tasking, opening several applications.

PES 2010 purchased this year runs fine, but yeh you are correct today's processors are far better.

It's a single core. It says 2 CPUs because of Hyper Threading.

The 7950 GT is not that old and should run the game just fine, may be not with all details at maximum.

Performance wise, the main problem is his CPU, but even that should be sufficient, usually.

@Starheaven: have you checked if another process is may be eating CPU time while you are playing Supreme Commander 2? Set Supreme Commander 2 to windowed mode and open the task manager while playing and let it sort by CPU usage, to figure that one out. (Or open the task manager on another screen, if you use multi-monitoring.)

From my experience troubleshooting for SupCom2, rarely have I seen a single core be able to play this game well.

Your graphics driver is a few months out of date, if there's a newer version up I'd install it. Your hardware spec looks ok though, its definitely enough for supcom2.

Do you run an antivirus / personal firewall application? If so you might want to try temporarily disabling it and running the game again, sometimes AV can cause issues with games. Norton's anti-virus for example infamous for this.

4Gb should be enough, but check your memory utilisation while running a game. Windows 7 can use quite allot of RAM and with other stuff running in the background it may be that you're maxing out you're available RAM.

Well personally having a P4 I will say there is definitely an issue on his end. =/ I can play SupCom 2 fine until midgame but it isnt as bad as what hes describing. Im running Windows 7, 2gb ram, 512mb ATI Radeon HD 4670 and obviously the same pentium 4 and i never have any issues like that with steam or SupCom 2.

I have checked the processes cpu not running at max SC takes up 527k there is dwm explorer and a few others that aren't high.

I am pretty sure the recent update is causing the game to freeze often. Prior to this update I was able to play offline without any issues, no screen freezes etc. The issue I had then was on line gaming in multiplayer, would get disconnected often and sometimes lagging. So I gave gave up playing online. My current system specs can play the game well even on lan. The problem is the recent update from Steam has now made the game unplayable even in offline mode. I verified the cache on Steam and files all ok.
Steam has done something to the game to make it freeze often. Prior to this update the game ran well offline.
Thank you all for your feedback it is much appreciated in trying to resolve this issue. Is anyone else having these issues after the recent update.

Ouch. I need to learn some stuff about hardware.. I just look at the numbers...

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
I pretty much assumed 2 CPUs meant dual core... excuse me for that :D

Starheaven wrote:

Even though this is definately not the cause of your problem, just wanted to point out that verifying game files doesnt mean ****. I think it only checks if the files are there, not if theyre corrupted. They sure as hell didnt detect I modded my files.. Also, a few times, files of mine got corrupted, and only after RANDOMLY DELETING game files, it would detect it, and redownload them. To get steam to do this, I had to delete a minimum of FIVE FILES before it detected anything.

Try closing Steam to the tray and launching the game from the right-click menu. That saves about 40 MB of RAM. I'm thinking that there is some software incompatibility in your system.

I think you were looking at memory utilization ("527k") and not CPU utilization ;).

I started my other computer with the same specs Steam took nearly 3 hours to update.
I have the exact same results on my second computer.
I started the game and it freezes after about 1 minute. To unfreeze the game I press ctr alt delete and then cancel and the game runs normal. It happens again after about another minute same procedure to unfreeze. I changed the graphics settings and aslo disabled antivirus the game still continues to freeze.
Whatever update Steam has done has made the game unplayable on both my computers.
Both SC games are purchased retail and the DLC x2 purchased from Steam. I am not going to play for a while and hope that GPG or Steam fix this issue.
I will never purchase any game that has links to Steam if the recent update is not fixed and will remove and throw away both games.
SC FA is a superb game why is SC 2 and Steam so problematic.
By the way how do you play in window mode in Windows 7 I could not find an option.

To play in windowed mode, it's pretty similar to how you do it in FA.

Open the Steam Library > right click Sup2 > properties > set launch options.

Add the following;

Code:
/size 1680 1050

In FA, you'd add this to the shortcut. It's executed by Windows the exact same way.

Still, start saving up for a faster computer. Or stop playing games from 2010.
