Please do tell sanman, what is the most important mechanic in Demigod because I was under the impression it were the flags. But it seems I haven been doing it wrong in over 300 online games then... :D

Uh, like every other competitive game, player skill. Out playing the opponent is how you win, and outplaying them and capturing the flags is just one part of that concept. Thought that was pretty obvious.

While it might be obvious that player skill is a very important factor in Demigod (like any other competitive game), what isn't obvious is that player skill is a game play mechanic in the first place.

While I was reading that post, I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts on what you might think the most important mechanic is but I'm not sure why you mentioned player skill like it's a game play mechanic. Warscore accumulation via flag holding for team upgrades is a mechanic. "Player skill" isn't.

Also, I'm also of the opinion that flags in Demigod cannot be so easily compared to runes in Dota. I'm sure you recall that holding flags for Warscore accumulation (and not just for buffs) is a critical aspect of furthering your team's chances of victory. The flags provide points of contention and fall back positions (TPing to team held flags) as well as asset control (portal flags like you've already acknowledged). They can also be used offensively like team TPing into a flag in the enemy's territory.

Perhaps I'm unenlightened, but I don't see the runes and buffs in Dota providing their own counterparts to these kinds of mechanics.
