Why are you guys only limited to physical wars?

How about a structure/technology that allow high level psychic to paralyze the entire opponent economy for a period of time?

A race of people have magic enhanced stones inserted into their body to allow them to telekinesis each other's thought in real time, forming a large knowledge web. With massive amount of wizards/sorcerers/etc linked, a giant magic crystal was able to be lifted into orbit and cast a beam of magic powerful enough to level earth's soil 50+ times.

Stone gate infused with magic to open a dimensional portal that warp a heavily armored wizard to anywhere in the universe and the wizard can create a massive army in matter of minutes by infusing surrounding nature with magic and turn them into golems and facilities for war... why do i feel such concept is so familiar?

Pffft, so conventional and boring. If I wanted medieval fantasy, I could play a dozen or more other games. The genre of the game and the scale shouldn't be it's only defining points. Medieval fantasy has been done to death - do modern or futuristic.

Maybe but in my book it's been a while since Stronghold II (and even that was far from perfect) and Age of Empires II. With the Moho engine there have to be more options now to make it a lot more realistic, at least for one Aramon-like faction then.

An aramon pure medieval side is perfectly fine, but that doesn't mean the other two or more sides can't have things that are a bit more exotic, not in a fantasy manner of speaking.

One of the great things about fantasy is that you can take pretty much anything and throw them together. Fantasy doesn't necessarily mean medieval + magic.

That is the "stereotype" fantasy though, aka "standard" fantasy. If you want to make a LoTR/WOW clone, then by all means do so, but you won't be able to use those buzzwords, like "Innovation", etc. (More directed towards GPG/CT)

Going for a medieval setting, with the scapegoat of fantasy, you can take all of the historical inventions --that were forgotten-- beforehand and build upon them. It does becomes more of a fiction-fantasy setting, true, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

For example, a simple steam engine was invented in the classical era, and the Byzantine empire used pump-action flame throwers for some of their elite infantry/guards.

For any side that doesn't have a decent access to magic, magicians, or fantasy creatures, going towards mechanical and scientific weaponry would seem like a possible option, no?

I WANT ONE SIDE TO HAVE AN ACU, BITCHES

but there's no reason to limit your fantasy to swords and shields.

I think he meant to post that here.

Yep..
In the end it was a bit meh, but it did have the diversity that the kids seem to be looking for..

I'd be happy with more traditional medieval fantasy myself. (Not pure tolkien/D&D.. Obviously, I expect GPG to put on their creative hats and make it their own in some way.. but I'm not clamoring for more steam-punk stuff either..)

ryuken, re1wind.

i agree with both of you guys. to hell with victorian steampunk. we have plenty of fantastic ideas to work with from the period of time itself. i mean, just look at some of the seige and ranged units we have to work with:

---
Greek Fire, Siege Tower, Trebuchet, Catapult, Ballista, Battering Ram.
---
Arbalest, Arbalest, Bombard, Bow, Culverin, Crossbow, Javelin, Sling, Short Bow
---

it's fantastic. and remember, you can always morph one of these units into your own twisted and bizarre version of it. there are no limits to being creative.

for example you could have a couple of brutes operating an oversized crossbow that fires a battering ram.

or, take Greek Fire for example. it was an incendiary weapon used by the Byzantine Empire. it even burned on water. it was projected through a tube for use aboard ships or in sieges. but portable projectors were also invented. so you could have a few meatheads squirting both liquid fire and noxious juices onto the battlefield to repel enemy troops.

you just take the base idea, and give it an unconventional twist. we don't need steampunk. we need to use our imaginations. we've got lots to work with!

scorpions? sure, why not.

I didn't suggest steampunk. I said a tank. I meant a Challenger II main battle tank. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenger_II

You guys have no originality. Hey,all the other fantasy **** is pre-modern, let's do that!

It's actually quite pathetic. Especially your post, katzen. It was very, "I'm afraid of change, here's stuff that's been done before, let's do that." That picture is hideous. If something like that ends up in Kings and Castles, there's no way that anybody with a brain cell should buy the game.

Fortunately, you could still purchase it.

I've always wondered howcome fantasy writers were so unimaginative. I have always liked this idea of magic and technology co-existing and expanding eachothers possibilities. I have also always wondered and been bothered that nature can never seem to co exist with either of these forces, a load of hogwash I say.

We should definitely get some modern-type weapons in this game. After all, shouldn't making supersonic airplanes be easier with magic? You don't need to invent the jet engine, just use the flying spell.

Why is it all magic-using societies should have a lower level of technology than modern? With magic to accomplish some tasks, you'd expect that they'd be more advanced, both as a society and technologically. I propose that instead of swordsmen and lances, your magic fantasy dragon game should also involve tanks. Lots and lots of tanks.

Then why not just play a RTS game with "lots and lots of tanks / [modern technology]," for example C&C4, Supcom, Starcraft, etc.

Archers take out those FV4034 Challenger 2 tanks!

Should there also be modern jet fighters to take out the dragons?

Seriously though, IF it's done properly (mixing fantasy and some elements of ARCHAIC technology, which some perhaps may even be infused with magic and unique / innovative to the K&C world), and doesn't ruin the overall medieval / fantasy setting, this may be a good idea.

With some other posters, it sounds like you want more of a sci-fi / fantasy setting which deviates significantly from the main medieval / fantasy theme.

Whilst I doubt this would get a good reception from most here, what about anime-style fantasy?

I dont mean the character designs or anything like that, but more the setting, magic, science, tech etc.

Anime fantasy usually is less traditional and more... awesome.

Like floating fortresses, dragons that shoot homing lasers, "Eye of God" giant darkness beam turrets, swordsman heroes that can slice mountains in half, magic users that summon nukes, and all that.

Seems like a good use of SCom engine to have a more spectacular fantasy setting.

Lot of the ideas here have been done before in other rts games. I know people always want innovation and new features, but I really think that taking/merging/blending/etc...ideas from other games that were done right, or correcting them, is extremely useful. These ideas could be unique unit types, cool creatures, amazing special abilities or more general gameplay concepts.

So what are some great ideas you'd like to see in Kings and Castles from other games?

Some well-known games for ideas might be Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of Mythology, Dawn of War, and Battle for Middle Earth.

Some less well-known games that might have ideas would be Heroes of Annihilated Empires, Paraworld, Rise of Legends, Worldshift, and Battleforge.
