I posted this on STardock forums. Half the people think i'm saying to remove click-to-move and another quarter are just uh I dunno.
What do you guys think?
http://forums.demigodthegame.com/322210
"Title: WASD
Body:
Pleaseeee?
And a big button near the bottom to click on to select our hero.
And E, R, or F hotkey to select our hero by default, and a button nearby to select all units(for generals) and possibly one to select all units by unit type(cycling).
Anddd Double tap attack key to hit the closest enemy.
1-5 for first 5 skills. shift+1-5 for the other 5.(There is 10, right?) This would annoy some people, but for me when my fingers are on WASD and hand on mouse reaching for 6-0 is too far away. At least need to be able to rebind to this with maybe 1-0 as default.. Or maybe have it default the way I said and make people realize my genius!
Those are the important ones i can think of.
Not sure if you turn around instantly or not.. if you do i'd have other hotkeys to suggest, like double-tap D to turn around while just pressing D to walk backwards(quicker that way then to move backwards). I'm guessing it's all probably instant so you wouldn't need to walk backwards for any reason I can think of."
Again, i'm not saying click-to-move should be removed. I'm just saying WASD+mouse is superior input method for controlling a single unit (as you do with an Assassin.)
Even in the Generals case i'd just be click-to-moving my units while i individually select my General to WASD.
Oh, and this should only apply to the Demigods. Doing it with Generals minions would probably hurt the load on the netcode and such, and is useless.

Beta is just 2 weeks away. =]
I thought so too, though. I also thought it sure would be nice to have it in phase1..
I can't help but think though if the game is designed around have WASD as an optional control scheme, which you'd tend to use in combat when controlling your Demigod, that it'd turn out as a better game.
GuildWars controls and combat was very good and solid IMO. It's the only autotarget/autoattack game that felt "right" to me combat wise.

Zoom out until you see both and move him? Slowly move your way there, estimating where you have to go from?Misfunctional
I really hate Stardocks forums..
The community here is soooo much better. :/

actually, it could get messy, in other words, would pressing W go north (up) or would pressing W go up on your screen. I say this because if you move the camera while moving, ect...

I would say it's based on your screens orientation. W makes your Demigod go towards the top of your screen. Not the top of the map. So it'd depend on screen orientation.
If it was based on your demigods orientation then A/D would need to be turning and Q/E strafe. More keys.
I think with Generals there should be a follow command for your minions to have them keep up with you when you move it both with click-to-move or WASD. I don't think using WASD to move with an army selected would really work.
I just think WASD is better for any game where you only have to control a single character, which you'll do in Demigod.

Sounds good to me, so long as there is an option to change the camera angle to chase mode.

well guild wars sytle QWEASD with chase camera would be nice also but that's 6 keys instead of 4.
I don't see why haven't all 3 options would be bad
But the reason I suggest WASD without even playing is because I think the game would play better if it's designed around using WASD. :/

They just need to open up the camera / unit control code to modding, and then we can do whatever we want.
(for example, in SCFA the space bar functionality is hardcoded, same with the mouse wheel. And hotkey remapping was not available out of the box. Very bad.)

ehhh no.. WASD needs to be in ranked play. No mods in ranked play (unless they're amazing mods.)
oh but yeah those things do need to be moddable. Just WASD needs t obe in vanilla..

WASD's a great idea. But not for Demigod. It would completely change the game. For example, it'd introduce "dancing" in PVP, which is contrary to the way the game is intended to be played.
Generally speaking, I was massively in favor of WASD for Space Siege, but it wouldn't work with the design of Demigod. Now, I could see doing a Demigod-like game with WASD...

See I like dancing.
And people do dance around in DotA, but it requires clicking back and forht, which isn't fun.
If I play Demigod next week and it turns out I somehow don't need to keep clicking behind me to back up, and then click back at an enemy to attack, then you're right. I don't see how the gameplay could be where dancing around won't give you an advantage. If dancing DOES give you an advantage, then WASD is favorable. Not having WASD won't mean people won't dance, it just means it'll be less convient and you'll missclick on attacks a lot from moving the cursor back and forth instead of keeping it over your target.
I just don't really see that being the case though.. but i guess i should just wait a week and see.
/edit
Unless there is target locking/remembering so you can click to move away then easily go back to attacking. In DotA after you move away you have to click the target again to go back and attack, and it really sucks if you miss click and it requires moving the mouse around so much.

Lets wait until you've got your hands on the beta and some playtime under your belt, then resume this conversation. It's definitely worthy of discussion- but we're on uneven footing right now until you've played the game.

This is a wise reply, and I appreciate very much how Tyo considers this idea and compares it to Space Siege before dismissing it : different kind of gameplays.
As others said, I believe the problem wouldn't exist if there were only Assassins and no Generals. There could be some gap between Generals and Assassins if it was easier to dance with an assassin than with a General (do you move all your units with WASD at the same time???). Gameplay between the two classes should be different, but not in the essential way of moving.
Let's wait and try the beta and see for ourselves.

After playing the beta a little, I do believe that I would like wasd. It just feels more fluid especially for the assassins, I do not know about the generals but I think in theory if you have them selected (assuming you can select other units) it should work fluidly for them as well. I dont really like click and move ofcourse.

Why wasn't WASD in Space Siege? Or did it get added? I didn't pay much attention.
