Alternative Music Order v1.2

Released: 30th August 2007
Compatible: All versions

Ever feel the music is Supreme commander is a bit repetitive?

By default the music in Supreme Commander for Skirmish or Multiplayer games has a list of 8 battle and 8 peace songs. It starts at song 1 and then plays song 2, 3, 4 etc in each category. You are considered "in battle" if you have units losing health. It loops each song until the mode changes from either battle or back to peace.

This means you hear the same track when you start each game and when you start your first battle. Which means if you typically play ranked you may never of heard some of the later tracks - you would hear track 1 from the peace selection for about 5 to 10 minutes and then you hear track 1 of the battle music, probably until the end of the game. People who player larger customs may have gone from battle back to peace a few times but would it happen 8 times in a battle?

So what does this mod do? It randomise the tracks from each of the battle and peace lists. I have found that it exposes you to much more of the games music.

It is a UI only mod so should be compatible with most other mods and also allowable for use in ranked or custom games.

You can download the latest version of this mod at:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dionysus/m ... cOrder.zip

To install just place the zip file in your Supcom mods folder and enable via the mod manager.

NOTE: For the best effect turn the music up to 100 and the FX down to 50 in the game options. By default the music seems to be set quite quiet in comparison to the FX.

Please let me know what if you think it improves your enjoyment of the games music!

Oh ... one more comment...

Make sure you have you sound settings so that music is on 100 and FX is on 50. The music in supcom is set to quiet by default.

This mod I give a 10 out of 10. It does what it promises and does it well.

Is there a way to randomize something badly?

yes you could give something a 1 percent chance to happen with another having a 99 percent chance to happen.

That wouldn't be random though, would it?

Ah but if I had done it so one song was 99% of the time and the others were all 1% of the time I would of "randomized it badly" BECAUSE it wouldn't of been random at all ;-D

More to the point did you think it helped the games music selection?

You wouldn't have randomized it at all, like you said, so you couldn't have done it well, OR badly. DZJAAAANG! Heh. Anyway.

I honestly haven't found out yet - the only opportunity I had to play last night was a quickie skirmish that had to be muted while I was on the phone.

I think doing something not at all is doing it badly ;-)

Anyway... have you tried it our yet?

I have! It works, but . . . . . strangely, it produces some slowdown on my machine. It must be interacting with another mod, but the only other audio mod is All Your Voices (which conflicts with strange things to begin with) and that's usually deactivated. In any case, most of my games last so long, none of the songs are really fresh to me.

Lurkily, Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear you have heard all the music... surely the fact you didn't have to start with the same build music every time must have at least been a little bit noticeable?

I really don't think is causing any slowdown and suspect its some kind of odd anti me FUD from Lurkily, but if anyone else experiences similar can they let me know.

Well Lurkily, here's something to rock your world.... In my first version of this mod I had made it so it selected tracks 4 to 8 more often (both build and attack pools). I did that as I felt most people wouldn't have heard those tracks.

But it hardly seems fair to tracks 1 to 4 ;-)

So version 1.1 of this mod is out. The starting tracks (for both building and attacking) is randomised between 2 and 8. I avoid track 1 cause I've heard it so often (and so have you).

So Lurkily, my random wasn't so random after all ;-)

Aright now this just really got me LOL =)

But anyway really nifty little mod, I like a little musical variation .. and experienced no slowdown whatsoever.

If you really want to make a point of this, then it was not random at all - not in the slightest. 'Random' only describes events with an equal probability of occurence. Yeesh.

Since most of my posts here have been defending my first (apparently either failed or misunderstood) attempt at ironic humor, I'll just drop one last note to say, this is the kind of mod I like the most - not huge rebalances or TC's, but small, easy mods that manage the game itself - All Your Voices, Area commands, Build Patters, SCU manager, SCA Gui, if not my favorite mods (two of them are. ;) ) these are my favorite kind of work to see in a mod. This one in particular should be good for short to mid-length games.

Good work, and keep on modding.

Good mod, although I'm having trouble with the music order. It seems to play one Peace song and stop. During battle, it only plays one song and then stops again. I'm sure I'll figure it out.

AgentSmith16,

You're the first one to notice that, but I think I have heard it myself a couple of times ...although Im usually caught up in the game ;-)

Looking at the code, this should happen to the standard music order too but it doesnt seem to happen as often.

I think its because some of the later tracks are quite short so if they get played early they finish before the music has a chance to switch. I will see if I can get it to play the next track as soon as the last finished.

AgentSmith16,

I have found the problem. In the default supcom music files peace tracks 6 to 8 are not set to loop. I have added a work around to this mod to loop those tracks.

Let me know how you go.

My supcom matches aren't that eventful, so I notice when the music stops, and it becomes quite annoying, and sometimes I have to purposely engage in battle in order to get music playing.

If this mod fixes this as well as adding variety, then I will definately download :D

Zodius,

Give it a go (its only a 4k download) and let me know how you go ;-)

Also I notice you do TA units. Any chance you want to apply your skills to doing a new SC unit? Even one interesting unit would be cool... how about a new T2 UEF bot that is quite slow but tough? UEF need a buff and SABs are already cover the fast but tough angle.... Happy to help if you can do the models ;-)
