Updating video card drivers

A quick step by step guide to updating video drivers.

1. Download new drivers for your graphics card.
ATI Radeon cards: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
NVidia GeForce cards: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

2. Download and install Driver Cleaner or CCleaner
http://www.addict3d.org/downloads/2925/download.html
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
(There are several other bits of software that do this too. Some are free, some aren't)

3. Use Add/Remove programs in your Windows Control Panel to remove your current drivers.

4. Restart your system

5. Run Driver Cleaner (/ ccleaner / whatever other app you're using to clean out the old drivers), and get it to look for and remove any leftover bits of drivers

6. Restart your system

7. Install your new drivers

Job done.

even better do all the stuff Xenoc said BUT run driver cleaner in Windovs safe mode

hehe, yeah, it can help. Although to be honest, I rarely do that myself and have come across no issues not doing it. if you have particularly sticky drivers or nasty hardware conflicts it's definitely a good idea though.

In terms of you can update drivers using this method, yes.

But new drivers won't make an old graphics card suddenly compatible.

OK, it's a DirectX 8 card which means no amount of driver updates will get it to run SupCom. Sorry.

even if i have direct 9 installed on mypc?

i guess ill have to go get anew one then haha. not that i bought this one in the first place, friend gave it me

Yeah, that card is seriously old kit - it's 4 generations behind the newest cards.

Even though you have DirectX 9 installed, your card does not have the hardware on it to be able to meet many of the DirectX 9 requirements, such as Shader Model 2, hardware instancing and so on. Lots of info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

What country are you ina nd what's your budget- we can help you spec a new card.

Aslo - be very aware that if the rest of you computer is as old as that card, the likelyhood is it may well not play the game. If you can post up a DxDiag as per the instructions in my signature we can give you some advice.

i live in the UK and atm i dont have a budget, but either once i get this loan or i start work, im willing to spend about £100

To be honest, you're going to have a hard time getting a playable game from it.

£100 is about right, as frankly putting any more into it is throwing good money after bad.

You can make a DXDiag as per instructions in my sig and look for the lines:

For example, int eh DX Diag above they state

Alternatively you could go to control panel, system, devices and look for driver details there.

However, your far larger problem is that your graphics card is a Mobile Intel(R) 945GM.

That means you are way below the minimum system requirements for the game - the Intel chips are not designed for any serious 3D rendering and will not cope with any mildly stressful game engine. Lots of info here

Basically, as it is a laptop you are highly unlikely to be able to upgrade the card, and as such will be unable to play Supreme Commander on it. In any case, laptops generally do not cope well with Supreme Commander as it is so hard on your CPU.

Do you have a desktop computer you might be able to play it on? If not, you're out of options short of buying a new PC or selling your copy of SupCom. Sorry.

What kind of games do you like?

Your big problem is that just about every game in the last 10 years ahs been optimised for use with a dedicated graphics card, which you don't have.

There are plenty of games that will run on your system, but don't expect them to be pretty (or necessarily good).
