Was very interesting but not explicative of the question that I raised, which is that surely the Higgs should be *right at the bottom* of the mass scale.

Why do protons have the same size charge as electrons, but are orders of magnitude bigger?
It's pure mindfuckery because the concept of weight/mass is engrained deeply in our perception of reality.

But both protons and electrons have the smallest unit of charge possible. Nothing has less charge than an electron. They are the charge carriers, and carry 1 unit of charge. This is directly against the "mass carrier", which has massively more than one unit of mass.

Actually, no. Quarks have charges that are fractions of the unit charge.

Oh. Then I guess that my original question applies to them too.

I'm guessing that it works in pretty much the same way that nuclear forces work. I'm no expert on the standard model, but I know that some nuclear forces are mediated by really heavy virtual particles. The only way this is possible, is because these particles also live only for a very short time. Virtual particles are spontaneous fluctuations of the vacuum and this makes them hard to detect. They constantly pop into existence for a little time and then get destroyed again. I bet the Higgs boson is similar to that.

Had an interesting segment on the radio the other day where they were interviewing a UofT prof who had been involved in the project.

As the story goes, the name "God Particle' was a bit of an inside joke. The original paper, written by a collogue of the interviewee on the subject of the Higgs Boson was supposed to be titled "the Goddammit Particle", but his publisher went around behind his back and changed the name to "The God Particle", for obvious reasons.Tthus the misnomer was formed, and physicists just sort of stayed quite and giggled about it while the name caused a shitstorm and grabbed their project a whole bunch of much-needed publicity.
