UPDATE: I've spent a couple of hours trawling manufacturer specs to give some idea of laptop card compatibility. Seems the X series Radeon cards and Go6xxx cards on upwards should be all fine, but I've kept them in yellow if I haven't had confirmation from one of you lovely people regarding success (or not) in getting it to run.

And when I say I checked the specs, it means I've looked for SM3 and geometry instancing. I haven't looked specifically at video RAM as this can vary enourmously. I'll trust you all to be able to work out whether your own card has the right amount ;)

MX440 is a very old card indeed, some 5 years old - it's the series before the FX5xxx.

There is no way it will support Supreme Commander as it is only a DirectX 8 card.

I'm also going to guess the rest of your system is around the same age, so will also struggle to play the game. Use http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest to check. Select the Supreme Commander option. It'll tell you whether you're able to run the game, and what other components may cause problems.

Post back here if you want upgrade advice. I'll send this same reply to your email address.

You passed recommended on a 5 year old system?!?!?!?!?!

Really?

Did you spend the national debt of a reasonably large country at the time?

I have what some might consider a stupid question, but I am looking into buying a new video card, and I am looking for some help. I want to buy the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS, but when I went to the local store the product that they have is made by BFG. I also work for the Gov't so I get a discount from Dell and they have the 8800 GTS but they have them made by EVGA and XFX.

Is there a difference? Or is there anything that I should know before I order from Dell.

It has been a while since I have upgraded anything as far as video and sound cards, so I am a little out of the know.

Can anyone help???

They're not that different. Nvidia makes a reference design and makes the chips, and manufacturers (BFG, EVGA, XFX, ASUS, etc.) make the actual product.

Differences are basically warranty and how far they're factory overclocked, if at all. It's still the same chip, with fundamentally similar performance.

Exactly as suntiger said - you may want to check out the exact specs such as what clockspeed they're running at, how many pipelines are enabled and so forth (often companies will put an overclock on the card before you buy it, so one manufacturers card will be at 425MHz, while others are running at 400Mhz). However, the actual GPU is designed and built by NVidia, and the card layout is built to a reference spec by NVidia - there's little physical difference between one card and another apart from the exceptions mentioned above.

It will work, but I wouldn't buy such an old and crappy video card ;)

Post a DXdiag, see Xenoc's signature how to do that.

I'm not exactly a computer expert, but I think my problem is my video card is a bit out dated. Hopefully someone here can help. The game looks terrible on my computer and runs really slow. I can't stand it. The videos run great with no slow down, but the game itself is a slog fest.

Here's my system spec:

Pentium 4 3.20GHz Intel processesor
3GB RAM
Radeon x600 256mb video card

So it's the video card, right? I think I saw it in the "yellow" section at the start of this post, but it still runs just awful.

Yeah, the yellow section is for cards that will run it (which apparently it does) but at pretty nasty speeds.

The x600 was never a great card unfortunately.

If you can give us an approximate budget, and whether it's an AGP or PCI Express slot, and what country you're in I'm sure people will be able to come up with some good options for you.

Xen.

What I did with my dads laptop was;
go to options --> Video --> turn Everything into; off & low
this may increase the speed
but don't play 4 vs 4 in Skirimish, you have a high chance your computer will crash that way

If it's one of those fancy notebooks, where you can upgrade or exchange the GPU... you might wanna buy a new one ;)
But I doubt that it is possible in your case.

Basically, laptops aren't designed for high spec gaming (unless you spalsh out a couple of thousand pounds on a gaming laptop, and even they aren't a patch on the desktop you could buy for the same money).

Laptops suffer from overheating and low power, which means even a graphics card of equivalent name and number to a desktop card will see nowhere close to the same performance as the desktop card.

Also, as you have experienced, most laptops are only fitted with onboard graphics like the 945. These cards utilise the CPU to do a lot of the graphics rendering. This makes them pretty much useless for 3D gaming.

The best you can do is find out if your laptop has an expansion slot for a replacement graphics card. if not, I'm afraid you're stuck.

Well if you run CPU-Z
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

and tell us what it says about your mainboard (or screenshot it and post up an image link of the mainboard window) we can work it out from there.

I ran CPUZ and it's PCI Express... couldn't get the screenshot thing to work though. But it says, "Graphic Interface: PCI Express" and "Link Width: x16" and "Max Supported: x16"
